Amazingly flavorful homemade Za’atar spice blend with toasted sesame seeds, dried herbs and sumac.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 C toasted sesame seeds
  • 3 tbsp dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp ground sumac
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp dried marjoram (or more oregano)
  • good pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. If using raw sesame seeds, toast them first on a dry skillet and let them cool completely.
  2. Add sesame seeds and pinch of salt into a mortar and crush them slightly to release the flavor.
  3. Now add dried herbs and again grind everything slightly with a pestle.
  4. Finally add ground sumac and mix everything thoroughly.
  5. Store in a jar for up to 1 month.
